Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive of AGI deployment, is stepping down from her full-time role and transitioning to a part-time adviser, the company announced Thursday. The move follows a monthslong medical leave Simo took after a severe exacerbation of a chronic neuroimmune condition. In a post on X, Simo stated that her recovery would be longer and more complex than anticipated, requiring her full focus. This departure marks a significant shift in the leadership structure of one of the most prominent AI companies.
Simo joined OpenAI’s board in March 2024 and was later hired by CEO Sam Altman to oversee product and business operations, allowing Altman to concentrate on research and the company’s data center buildout. Prior to OpenAI, she served as CEO of Instacart and head of the Facebook app at Meta. Her tenure at OpenAI began shortly after a health relapse; she was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) in 2019. In an April memo to staff, Simo acknowledged postponing medical tests and therapies to prioritize work, but now requires new interventions to stabilize her health.
The leadership change coincides with a broader executive shakeup at OpenAI. Brad Lightcap, former COO, shifted to oversee special projects, while president and cofounder Greg Brockman took over product strategy. Further reorganization placed Thibault Sottiaux as head of core products, including ChatGPT. These moves reflect OpenAI’s effort to streamline operations as it prepares for a planned IPO, now expected in 2027, with a reported target valuation of $1 trillion.
As part of this focus strategy, OpenAI has merged teams working on ChatGPT, its AI-powered browser, and its AI coding agent into a single “superapp” initiative. The company has also discontinued distant bets such as the video generation tool Sora. This consolidation aims to concentrate resources on a few core products ahead of the IPO, signaling a shift from experimental projects to more commercially viable offerings.
Earlier on Thursday, OpenAI unveiled the biggest product update to ChatGPT since its release, launching an AI agent capable of acting on behalf of users—moving local files and writing code—and redesigning the desktop app. This update brings features previously limited to Codex, such as creating bespoke software projects with AI. The timing of these announcements, coinciding with Simo’s departure, underscores the company’s momentum despite internal changes.
Reactions within the AI community have noted the abruptness of Simo’s exit, though many express understanding given her health challenges. Analysts view her transition as part of a natural evolution as OpenAI matures. The company’s focus on a “superapp” and IPO preparation suggests a strategic pivot toward long-term growth, even as it navigates leadership transitions and health-related departures. Simo’s part-time advisory role indicates she will remain connected to the company's mission.
Looking ahead, OpenAI’s reorganization under Brockman and Sottiaux, combined with the ChatGPT update, positions the company to compete aggressively in the AI market. The planned IPO in 2027 could be a landmark event, but success will depend on executing the superapp vision and maintaining investor confidence. Simo’s departure, while significant, appears part of a broader restructuring aimed at sharpening focus ahead of these ambitious goals.
