Australian autonomous mapping and robotics company Emesent has secured AUS$25 million in funding to scale its operations and accelerate development of its AI and cloud software platforms. The investment round includes a AUS$10 million venture debt facility from the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) and a AUS$15 million equity round backed by Main Sequence, QIC Ventures, Orion Resource Partners, Hostplus, and NGS Super. This funding marks a significant milestone for the Queensland-based company, which spun out of CSIRO in 2018.
Emesent specializes in autonomous mapping, LiDAR, and robotics technology for challenging environments. Its product portfolio includes the Hovermap STX, a LiDAR payload for drones, vehicles, and backpack scanning; the Emesent GX1, an all-in-one scanner combining SLAM, RTK, and 360-degree imagery; Aura, a cloud-based software for 3D data processing; and Cortex AI, autonomous flight software for GPS-denied areas. The company’s solutions are used across mining, defense, architecture, engineering, construction, and critical infrastructure in over 40 countries.
The funding will be used to scale manufacturing at Emesent’s facility in Wacol, Queensland, and advance two platform initiatives: Cortex AI and Aura. The company currently employs 109 people in Australia and plans to expand to meet international demand. Emesent’s flagship Hovermap product is deployed at more than 200 mine sites globally and is considered critical by customers such as Rio Tinto, BHP, and Glencore.
The implications of this investment are far-reaching. It strengthens Australia’s sovereign capability in robotics and autonomous systems, creating highly skilled jobs and anchoring deep-tech capabilities domestically. The NRFC’s participation, its first venture debt deployment to a deep-tech company, highlights the growing importance of non-dilutive growth capital for commercializing Australian innovation. This funding also positions Emesent to deepen its presence in key sectors like mining, defense, and critical infrastructure.
CEO Charles Miller emphasized the strategic value of the investment. “Our clients operate in some of the most demanding environments on the planet, and they rely on our technology to make those environments understood,” he said. He added that the support from NRFC enables scaling manufacturing, pushing AI capabilities, and deepening presence in sectors crucial to Australia’s future, including mining, defense, and critical infrastructure.
NRFC CEO David Gall noted the broader economic impact. “Robotics and autonomous systems are emerging as critical segments of the Australian economy, and this investment will help anchor these capabilities in Australia,” he stated. The fund’s backing reflects confidence in Emesent’s commercial traction and growth potential.
Looking ahead, Emesent plans to leverage the capital to expand its global footprint. The company recently completed a global AEC Solutions roadshow across the Americas, Europe, and Asia for its GX1 product. With continued innovation in AI and autonomy, Emesent aims to solidify its leadership in autonomous mapping and intelligence, driving efficiency and safety in hazardous environments worldwide.
