Robinhood announced that eligible US crypto traders will soon be able to connect third-party AI agents to execute trades autonomously, expanding a feature already available for equities and options. Since launching a beta version in late May, over 70,000 agentic accounts have been created for equities and options trading. The move marks Robinhood's latest push into autonomous trading, with a company executive stating during a Friday presentation that users can "work with an agent to create a strategy with specific guardrails and not need to be constantly monitoring your account."
Robinhood did not set a specific rollout date for US crypto traders but indicated that UK customers would be next in line. Equities traders can already ask AI agents to invest in crypto mining stocks. The expansion aligns with Robinhood's broader crypto strategy, which includes real-world asset tokenization and the launch of Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum layer 2 blockchain. Johann Kerbrat, Robinhood's senior vice president of crypto, revealed that the chain processed 17 million transactions from nearly 350,000 wallet addresses in its first week.
The AI agents are designed to level the playing field for retail investors. The executive explained that the feature enables retail users to base trades on data they might otherwise overlook, putting them on a more equal footing with institutions. "This is another big step towards giving retail investors every advantage that institutions have enjoyed for decades," the executive said during the presentation.
Robinhood offers the agentic accounts through third-party AI companies, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX's Grok. Additionally, eligible users can authorize AI agents to make credit card purchases on their behalf. The development comes as industry leaders like Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire predict that AI agents will become dominant users of blockchain payments in the near future.
Several notable integrations have advanced AI agent-driven stablecoin spending. In May, Amazon Web Services integrated Coinbase's x402 payments protocol into Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, enabling agents to transact in USDC. In April, crypto wallet startup Oobit launched a Visa-supported virtual card for AI agents to make online purchases in USDT on behalf of businesses. Despite these efforts, Artemis data shows that AI-agent transaction activity on blockchain remains small, with only $2 million in volume through the x402 protocol in June, indicating adoption is still lagging.
