Global law firm Reed Smith has launched an automated compliance platform called Aquarius to help crypto companies navigate the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. The platform automates key compliance tasks such as crypto-asset classification, regulatory white paper generation, due diligence, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures. This launch follows the end of the MiCA transition period on July 1, after which crypto companies can no longer rely on temporary national exemptions in EU member states.

Reed Smith is a global law firm with over 30 offices across North America, Europe, and Asia. The firm operates a digital asset practice under its ā€œOn Chainā€ initiative, advising on high-profile industry transactions including Trump Media’s $2.5 billion Bitcoin treasury financing and Nakamoto Holdings’ merger with KindlyMD. Aquarius is intended to simplify MiCA compliance by combining automated workflows with legal expertise, targeting companies entering the European market or expanding their crypto offerings.

The MiCA framework establishes comprehensive licensing, consumer protection, and operational requirements for digital asset service providers across the 27-member EU. After the transition period, full compliance is mandatory. Reed Smith plans to expand Aquarius to support crypto compliance regimes in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, and Singapore, reflecting global demand for such tools.

Despite MiCA's harmonized framework, obtaining authorization remains complex for many service operators. Last week, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) launched a supervisory review of authorized crypto-asset service providers, examining how custodians safeguard client assets and manage operational risks. According to Sebastien Dessimoz, co-founder and managing partner of digital asset infrastructure provider Taurus, obtaining a MiCA license is merely the beginning, with ongoing scrutiny over cybersecurity, governance, and asset protection.

Reports suggest EU policymakers are considering revisions to MiCA’s stablecoin framework, including rules governing the issuance of non-euro-denominated stablecoins. These discussions have been prompted in part by the United States’ GENIUS Act, which established a federal framework for payment stablecoins. The evolving regulatory landscape underscores the need for robust compliance solutions like Aquarius.

Looking ahead, Reed Smith’s expansion plans for Aquarius to other jurisdictions highlight the growing demand for automated compliance platforms globally. As crypto companies navigate MiCA and other regulatory regimes, tools that streamline workflows and integrate legal expertise will become increasingly vital. Aquarius represents a significant step toward bridging legal expertise with technology in the digital asset space, potentially setting a precedent for future compliance innovations.
