Apple has released the public beta of iOS 27, featuring a major overhaul of its voice assistant now branded as Siri AI. This marks the first time the general public can test the long-promised revamped Siri, which was previewed at WWDC in June. The update transforms Siri from a simple voice command tool into a comprehensive assistant integrated across the iPhone experience, including a new chatbot-style app and deeper system-level access.
The new Siri AI expands beyond voice interactions, allowing users to access it via text through a dedicated app or directly from the iPhone's search functionality. Early hands-on testing shows the assistant can handle tasks like finding old vacation photos, sending quick texts, and recommending restaurants from basic prompts. While not flawless, the updated Siri feels notably more useful, especially for users who rarely engaged with the previous version.
A key feature is Siri AI's integration into the operating system, giving it access to personal context that standalone chatbots like ChatGPT cannot easily achieve. According to Nabila Popal, senior research director at International Data Corporation, the assistant is woven across the entire ecosystem, accessible from anywhere on the device. Josh Clark, principal at Big Medium, notes that Siri's deep system integration allows it to leverage contextual data that third-party assistants lack.
However, the public beta lacks some advanced capabilities. The new Siri app does not yet include a memory feature to store user preferences, meaning users must repeatedly provide details like dietary restrictions. Apple is expected to add such functionalities in future iterations. Additionally, after installing the beta, users must join a waitlist and wait for device indexing before Siri AI is fully operational.
Reactions from analysts highlight the strategic importance of this update. Popal emphasizes that the accessibility and integration are well-executed, potentially changing how users interact with their iPhones. Clark points out that Siri's contextual awareness could give Apple a competitive edge over rivals like Google Assistant and third-party chatbots. The update positions Siri as a central tool for navigating the iPhone, rather than a peripheral feature.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to iterate on Siri AI with new capabilities, including memory features and improved personal context handling. The company has also introduced privacy controls, allowing users to set conversation retention periods to 30 days, a year, or forever. As the beta evolves, early adopters may uncover hidden gems that become daily habits, potentially driving wider adoption of Siri among iPhone users who previously ignored it.
