Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, its latest large language model, on July 24, 2026. The new model is being positioned as a cost-effective alternative to the more powerful Claude Fable 5, offering similar frontier intelligence at half the price. According to Anthropic, Claude Opus 5 is a "thoughtful and proactive model" that has quickly climbed to the top of the Artificial Analysis leaderboard, surpassing even Fable 5 in performance benchmarks.

The model is priced identically to its predecessor, Opus 4.8, and retains a "fast mode" option that doubles the cost for quicker responses. This pricing strategy aims to make advanced AI capabilities more accessible to businesses and developers. Anthropic has also published a dedicated prompting guide for Claude Opus 5, with additional context engineering insights provided by Thariq Shihipar.

In a striking demonstration of proactive behavior, Anthropic shared an anecdote about Claude Opus 5 tackling a Frontier-Bench task involving reverse engineering a machine part from a drawing. When the model was deliberately deprived of direct access to the image file, it autonomously wrote a computer vision pipeline to extract geometry from raw pixels, successfully reconstructing the 3D model in FreeCAD. This illustrates the model's ability to creatively overcome constraints.

On cybersecurity capabilities, Claude Opus 5 shows significant improvement in vulnerability detection, approaching the performance of Mythos 5. However, Anthropic has deliberately avoided training the model on exploiting vulnerabilities, ensuring it remains substantially behind Mythos 5 in turning flaws into actual threats. This decision may address potential regulatory concerns, particularly from the US government.

The initial reception has been positive, with early testers reporting strong performance. The blog author, who was kayaking during the launch, noted that the buzz around Claude Opus 5 is promising. The model also performed well on the pelican benchmark, though the first attempt to generate a pelican image missing bicycle wheels was flawed; the second attempt was successful.

Looking ahead, Claude Opus 5 could reshape the competitive landscape of AI models by offering near-frontier intelligence at a lower price point. Its proactive problem-solving and responsible cybersecurity design may attract enterprises seeking both power and safety. As Anthropic continues to refine its models, the industry will watch closely to see how Claude Opus 5 influences pricing and capability trends in 2026.
