Rocket Lab is expanding its launch operations to Alaska under a $266 million contract with the U.S. Space Force. The California-based company, which currently flies from New Zealand and Virginia, will conduct up to 18 missile-defense missions, most of them from the Pacific Spaceport Complex on Kodiak Island. Announced on July 27, this deal marks a significant step in Rocket Lab's involvement in national security space operations.
The Pacific Spaceport Complex has hosted nearly three dozen missions since 1998, primarily suborbital flights for the U.S. military. Recently, it supported launches of private rockets from Astra and ABL Space Systems. Rocket Lab's missions will likely use the HASTE suborbital variant of its Electron small-satellite launcher, which customers employ to test hypersonic technologies. HASTE made its debut in June 2023 and has completed nine missions to date.
The contract covers 12 suborbital launches with options for up to six more. These missions may be part of the United States' Golden Dome missile-defense initiative, though details remain scarce. Rocket Lab has not disclosed the exact timeline or payload specifics, but the deal underscores growing demand for responsive launch capabilities.
This agreement bolsters U.S. national security by providing high-frequency launch capacity to address urgent threats. Rocket Lab's CEO Peter Beck expressed confidence in the company's ability to meet these demands with speed and scalability. The Space Force's trust in Rocket Lab reflects the company's proven track record with its Electron rocket, which has flown 82 times since its first launch in May 2017.
Industry analysts view this contract as a major milestone for Rocket Lab, diversifying its revenue streams beyond commercial small-satellite launches. The deal also strengthens the U.S. military's access to launch sites in strategic locations like Alaska, which is geographically ideal for missile defense trajectories against potential threats from across the Pacific.
Looking ahead, Rocket Lab's expansion into Alaska positions it for further government contracts and potentially more missions under the Golden Dome initiative. With a growing launch cadence and operational experience across multiple sites, the company is poised to play a key role in America's space defense infrastructure. The partnership signals a long-term commitment to meeting evolving national security requirements.
