Tether, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) to explore tokenization and blockchain-based market infrastructure. The deal marks a significant step toward integrating digital assets into traditional African capital markets. Under the agreement, the parties will investigate tokenized securities, real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, and the potential use of USDT as a settlement layer.

The MoU, announced on Tuesday, outlines plans to leverage Tether's Hadron tokenization platform for issuing and trading tokenized securities. It also includes digital asset education and assessment of instant settlement mechanisms, subject to Kenyan regulatory approval. This partnership aims to modernize the NSE's infrastructure by introducing blockchain technology.

The initiative comes amid growing traction for tokenized RWAs. According to RWA.xyz, the onchain value of tokenized RWAs has reached approximately $36.8 billion, excluding stablecoins. Stablecoins, which some consider RWAs due to their backing by offchain reserves, total nearly $298 billion, with USDT commanding a market cap of roughly $184 billion.

This collaboration could enhance liquidity and efficiency in Kenya's capital markets by enabling faster settlement and fractional ownership of assets. It may also set a precedent for other African exchanges to adopt blockchain technology and stablecoin-based settlement. The use of USDT as a settlement layer could reduce transaction costs and processing times.

Industry experts view the deal as a validation of tokenization's potential in emerging markets. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized the opportunity to modernize financial infrastructure, while NSE leadership sees it as a way to attract tech-savvy investors. Both parties expressed optimism about the regulatory environment in Kenya.

If regulatory approvals are secured, the NSE could become one of the first major African exchanges to integrate stablecoin settlement. The partnership may accelerate broader adoption of tokenized securities across the continent. This development highlights the growing intersection of traditional finance and blockchain technology in Africa.

The future outlook for the partnership includes potential expansion of tokenization services to other asset classes. Education initiatives will help stakeholders understand digital assets. As the global tokenization market expands, this deal positions Kenya as a potential hub for blockchain-based finance in Africa.

Overall, the Tether-NSE MoU represents a strategic move to modernize capital markets and explore the benefits of blockchain technology. With strong fundamentals in the tokenization space, the collaboration could drive significant changes in how securities are issued, traded, and settled in the region.
