During the third fiscal quarter conference call for fiscal year 2026 held recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted that with the upcoming release of iOS 27, Apple plans to introduce a higher-tier iCloud+ subscription for users who frequently use AI features. This statement has drawn widespread industry attention to Apple's monetization strategy for AI services.
It is reported that Apple first unveiled the Apple Intelligence feature suite in June 2026, including enhanced Siri, generative image and text tools, and more. However, due to the reliance of these AI features on powerful server-side models, Apple has set daily usage limits to prevent excessive consumption of computing resources. Previously, most iCloud+ plans already included higher access rights, but Cook's latest comments suggest that for heavy users, Apple may offer a dedicated upgrade option to meet their more frequent AI usage needs.
Cook predicted during the conference call that after the official release of iOS 27, Apple Intelligence will attract a large number of users to try it, especially the interactive features of Siri AI. He added, "We will offer some kind of upgrade option on iCloud+ that users can purchase to access a higher level of service." Although Cook did not specify pricing or tier names, analysts believe this could be a key step in Apple's monetization of AI features.
From a technical perspective, Apple Intelligence relies on collaboration between cloud-based large models and local hardware. Every time a user calls for image generation or complex queries, server computing power is consumed. Apple may use a subscription mechanism to balance costs while preventing free abuse. Similarly, OpenAI and Microsoft have already charged for advanced API calls, while Apple's approach may align more closely with its existing service ecosystem.
This change will directly impact iOS users who frequently use AI features. Currently, the basic iCloud+ plan (50GB) costs $0.99 per month, with higher tiers (200GB, 2TB, etc.) priced accordingly. The new AI subscription tier is likely to be bundled with storage or offered as an add-on. For users who rely on Siri for workflows and content creation, the additional cost could amount to several dollars per month, potentially altering their cost assessment of the Apple ecosystem.
Industry reactions are mixed. Tech analysts point out that Apple is replicating its service business growth strategy by adding differentiated pay points to increase average revenue per user. However, some user groups worry that additional subscriptions for AI features could weaken iOS's competitiveness. Nasdaq analyst Jane Liu said, "Apple must price carefully to avoid scaring off users while finding a sustainable model for infrastructure costs."
Looking ahead, Apple may officially announce details of the new iCloud+ tier at next month's WWDC 2027. Given that Google and Samsung have already monetized AI features through Google One AI Premium and Galaxy AI subscriptions, Apple's move is not surprising. The new tier is expected to offer more relaxed daily limits, prioritized response speeds, and possibly offline AI enhancements.
From an industry trend perspective, monetization of AI features has become a consensus among tech giants. Apple, as an integrator of hardware and services, is attempting to transform AI capabilities into sustainable revenue without harming user experience. Cook's hint marks Apple's AI strategy moving from pure feature competition into the deep waters of business model exploration, and its effectiveness will directly impact the long-term competitiveness of the iOS ecosystem.
