NVIDIA has introduced a new tutorial demonstrating how to build a multimodal retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline using NeMo Retriever and hosted NIM microservices. The workflow enables developers to process complex PDF documents containing text, tables, charts, and infographics. It provides a complete solution from offline text extraction to grounded response generation with citations.
Traditional RAG systems focus on text-only retrieval, but many real-world documents include visual data that carries critical information. This tutorial closes that gap by integrating NIM endpoints for detecting page elements, OCR, table structure recognition, and graphic elements. As a result, the pipeline captures both textual and visual content for more comprehensive retrieval.
The tutorial specifies a Python 3.12 environment and the nemo-retriever package, with an initial offline extraction step using the PDFium library. This step operates on the CPU without requiring a GPU or API key, making the base workflow accessible. The sample document, multimodal_test.pdf, is downloaded from the NeMo-Retriever GitHub repository.
After offline text extraction, the pipeline connects to hosted NVIDIA NIM endpoints. These include page-elements detection, OCR, table structure recognition, graphic elements, dense embeddings, and vision-language reranking. The embedding model is nvidia/llama-nemotron-embed-1b-v2, while reranking uses llama-nemotron-rerank-vl-1b-v2.
Processed content is stored in the LanceDB vector database, which supports metadata-filtered search and dense retrieval. The system performs vision-language reranking and generates grounded responses with inline citations. A recall-at-k evaluation metric is included to measure retrieval quality across multimodal content.
This tutorial addresses a growing need for multimodal document understanding in enterprise AI. Developers can now build systems that answer questions over scanned reports, academic papers, and business documents with verifiable sources. The approach reduces the complexity of combining OCR, table parsing, and image understanding into a single pipeline.
The tutorial reflects a broader shift toward hosted microservices that simplify AI infrastructure. As NVIDIA continues to expand its NIM catalog, developers can expect even tighter integration and faster deployment. The NeMo Retriever pipeline offers a scalable foundation for production-grade multimodal RAG applications.
