The bitcoin price level where leveraged bulls could get whacked

Bitcoin leveraged bulls face a major liquidation risk if prices fall to $57,000, according to analysts. The level could trigger a wave of forced long liquidations, amplified by thin liquidity and unusually high open interest. Bitcoin currently trades near $64,000.

In futures trading, leverage allows a trader to control a large position with a small margin deposit. The exchange fronts the rest, magnifying both gains and losses. When margin is exhausted, the exchange auto-liquidates the position. This mechanism is why price levels matter.

"$57,000 is a key region to watch," said Joao Wedson, CEO of Alphractal. "If Bitcoin trades down into that area, we could see a massive wave of long liquidations." The number of active contracts is unusually large relative to trading volume, as CoinDesk reported Monday.

Thin order books would struggle to absorb such liquidations at stable prices, potentially causing a sharper, faster drop. That dynamic could turn a routine pullback into a forced sell-off. For bulls, $57,000 is the line in the sand.

Past bear cycles have seen 76-84% declines; the latest slide from October's highs above $126,000 has only halved prices. Bitfinex analysts say bitcoin is between the long-term holder realized price of $52,699 and short-term holder realized price of $67,176. A break below the $63,200 median could retest June's low of $57,803. Historically, a final large liquidation wave precedes the bottom, noted Wedson.

Despite negative news, bitcoin has held above $62,000, with a potential inverse head-and-shoulders pattern targeting $76,000. This resilience suggests the market may be turning bullish, but a slide to $57,000 would first test the leveraged bulls' resolve.
