Google announced today that it will provide eligible American college students with a free one-year subscription to Google AI Pro. The service normally costs $19.99 per month and includes 4x Gemini usage limits, access to Gemini Spark, and the ability to use Gemini integrated into Gmail and Google Docs. In addition, subscribers get 5TB of cloud storage.
For eligible college students outside the US, Google will provide a free one-year Google AI Plus subscription, which includes Gemini Omni, 4x Gemini usage limits, and 400GB of storage. At the same time, US students can also choose to subscribe to a bundle of Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium for $8.99 per month, a 70% discount off the original price, and can enjoy this price for four consecutive years, but they need to verify their identity through SheerID.
To further support education, Google has added a Student Hub in Gemini, offering features like study notes, diagnostic quizzes, and study plans. Gemini Notebook has now been added to the AI Mode of Search, allowing students to create dedicated notebooks for each project or course, and these notes will automatically sync and appear in search results. This feature will roll out to more than 180 countries and regions in the coming days.
Google Search can now generate customized tools and simulations for complex concepts, and provide practice quizzes for standardized tests such as ACT, AP, and GRE. The generative user interface in AI Mode has been rolled out globally and will be integrated into AI Overviews in the coming weeks. The Lens feature in Search is also about to launch an interactive learning experience, where students can simply use the Google app to take a photo of the problem they are solving to get an AI overview that includes troubleshooting and detailed explanations.
Students can register for the free AI plan on Google's official website by December 31, 2026. After the free subscription period ends, unless you cancel, Google will charge the standard rate of $19.99 per month (AI Pro) or $4.99 per month (AI Plus). Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a personal Google account, and provide a valid school email address when required to verify student status.
These new features aim to reduce learning difficulty through AI technology and provide personalized learning support. For example, the Student Hub can help users create study plans, while the practice quiz feature can assist with exam preparation. Google hopes these tools will make it easier for students to access learning resources.
As AI education features gradually improve, Google plans to continue expanding related services in the future. The Notebook feature for AI Mode will cover more countries in the coming days, and the practice quiz feature is now available. For students, this marks a new stage in AI-assisted learning.
