Atom and NSK Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating Japan's humanoid robotics industry. The agreement focuses on jointly developing and testing robotic components and AI systems to bolster domestic production capabilities.

This collaboration brings together Atom's expertise in robotics and physical AI with NSK's leadership in precision components and mass-production technology. The core objective is to build a more integrated development and production system within Japan, addressing current challenges in supply stability and manufacturing capacity for a nascent domestic industry.

A key part of the partnership involves testing NSK-developed actuators—the components driving robot joints—on Atom's humanoid robots. Data collected from these evaluations will be used to improve performance and tackle requirements for mass production. Furthermore, Atom humanoid robots will be deployed at NSK manufacturing sites to gather real-world physical AI data from production environments.

The collected data is intended to enhance Atom's physical AI platform models, enabling the development of robots capable of performing more advanced manufacturing tasks. This approach aims to bridge the critical gap between advanced AI software and reliable hardware, which Atom's president, Shunsuke Aoki, describes as "extremely difficult" with few successful global examples.

NSK's president and CEO, Akihito Ichii, emphasized the partnership's role in supporting Japan's robotics industry. He stated that realizing a society where robots work alongside humans requires the fusion of superior AI and robust hardware, with NSK providing the reliability and durability needed for the field.

The announcement follows Atom's successful seed funding round in June, where the company raised 3 billion yen (approximately $19 million). The funds are earmarked for hiring, development infrastructure, and commercialization, signaling a clear path toward future mass production. While no specific timetable for deployment was provided, the partnership marks a significant step in Japan's efforts to compete in the global humanoid robot race.
