Bitcoin's recent surge past $80,000 is being bolstered by a lesser-tracked market dynamic: strong order book liquidity. This indicator suggests the rally is supported by genuine, broad-based demand rather than being driven by a few large orders in a thin market. The development lends significant credibility to the price advance.

The cryptocurrency rose nearly 25% last week, marking its strongest weekly performance in over three years. This move pushed its price above the $80,000 threshold. The rally was fueled by robust inflows into spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and a U.S. Treasury bond-buyback announcement.

A key metric from CoinDesk Research shows market depth remained high throughout the surge. The average 0.5% market depth—the combined value of buy and sell orders within 0.5% of the current price—stood at roughly $9.6 million in BTC on August 18. This level is comparable to records seen at the start of the year and is higher than levels from October when bitcoin traded above $120,000.

Market depth is fundamental for assessing price stability. High liquidity during a rally indicates that capital is moving in size to support the advance. Conversely, a rally on low liquidity may be fragile, driven by outsized orders that can easily reverse.

The findings are particularly noteworthy because August is typically a thin month for liquidity in both crypto and traditional finance. Traders often scale back during the Northern Hemisphere summer. The fact that depth held steady through a 25% surge argues that substantial buying was being absorbed by the market.

This pattern of strong order book liquidity is not limited to bitcoin. Data indicates that ether and solana also showed higher 0.5% depth on August 25 than in October. This suggests a broader market strength.

Looking ahead, liquidity conditions are expected to improve further as traders return from summer holidays. This could support large trades and continued investment in scarce assets like bitcoin and gold. The environment remains favorable for investors navigating financial repression in advanced economies.
