Nvidia has reportedly agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the popular open-source AI model hub, in a deal valued at $12.9 billion. The agreement was first reported by The Information, citing a source familiar with the matter, with Business Insider noting the talks could still fall through before a signed agreement is finalized. Neither Nvidia nor Hugging Face has publicly commented on the potential acquisition.
The deal would significantly bolster Nvidia's position in the open-source AI ecosystem. Founded in 2016, Hugging Face has become a central platform where developers share and download AI models, directly competing with the closed-source systems from leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. This acquisition comes as major tech companies increasingly invest in their own AI chips, threatening Nvidia's dominance in hardware.
Industry analysts suggest the move is strategically critical for Nvidia. By controlling a key open-source hub, Nvidia can ensure a thriving alternative to closed AI systems, ultimately maintaining demand for its own graphics processing units. The company has already invested tens of billions of dollars into developing open-source AI models to support this strategy.
Hugging Face's recent alignment with Nvidia's vision appears to have set the stage for this deal. CEO Clem Delangue has publicly advocated for open-source AI, including co-signing a letter with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang urging the U.S. government to support open models rather than restrict them. Delangue has also warned about China's growing influence in the open-source space.
The acquisition also offers Nvidia a potential path back into the cloud computing market. After scaling back its own DGX Cloud service, owning Hugging Face's platform could provide an established channel to offer cloud-based AI tools. Additionally, it could help Nvidia manage commitments to cover customer cloud computing costs by redirecting unused capacity to Hugging Face users.
The proposed price represents a substantial increase from Hugging Face's last known valuation. In 2023, the company raised $235 million in a funding round that valued it at $4.5 billion. The deal remains subject to final agreement and has not yet been officially confirmed by either party.
