Sparrow Wallet, a privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet, has released version 2.5.4 following an extensive AI-assisted code review. The update, announced on Thursday, contains dozens of security fixes identified primarily through this artificial intelligence analysis. Developer Craig Raw stated that the AI review produced the bulk of the work for this release.
The security audit was motivated by recent developments in the AI field. Raw cited the release of unrestricted Chinese AI models and the new ability to search large codebases for potential exploits as key catalysts. This proactive approach was further inspired by a July attack on Coldcard, where a flaw in seed-generation code allowed private key reconstruction.
Coldcard's manufacturer, Coinkite, suggested AI may have helped the attacker find that vulnerability. This incident triggered significant activity in the Bitcoin security community. Raw emphasized that the new capability to scan code was the primary driver for Sparrow's review.
The updated wallet enhances security for several critical functions. It now cryptographically verifies that transactions from Electrum servers are the ones requested and checks their inclusion in the Bitcoin blockchain. Version 2.5.4 also strengthens hardware wallet security for BitBox02, requiring specific firmware and anti-klepto protection.
Additional changes improve handling for Ledger, Trezor, and multisignature wallets. The update redacts secrets from debug logs, restricts directory access, and fixes DNS leaks when using Tor. These modifications aim to reduce trust in external services and protect user privacy.
Despite the number of changes, Raw clarified that no immediate threat to user funds was discovered. He personally reviewed every issue flagged by the AI, finding no evidence of past exploitation. The developer recommends all users install the update, though he acknowledges some with air-gapped setups may be hesitant.
Raw encourages even reluctant users to review the changelog to make an informed decision. Sparrow's security push is part of a broader industry trend. Developers across the Bitcoin ecosystem are now increasingly using AI to proactively scan wallets, protocols, and code libraries for flaws before malicious actors can exploit them.
