Google has implemented a significant change to its search interface, automatically expanding AI-generated summaries at the top of the results page for certain queries. This adjustment pushes traditional website links much further down the page, potentially requiring extensive scrolling. Users now encounter a full AI Overview at the top, followed by an "Ask anything" box, and only then the standard list of links.

Previously, users saw a condensed AI Overview with a "Show more" button. The new, dynamic expansion is not consistent across all searches. The criteria for when it triggers remain unclear, though it appears to activate for some queries more reliably than others, such as "what is the best game on switch 2".

Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz explained the rationale in a statement. She stated that for certain topics, the company's systems determine an auto-expanded view is most helpful. Kutz cited internal research suggesting this format leads users to find Search more useful and engage in deeper exploration.

A key feature mentioned is a scroll-correction mechanism. Kutz noted that if a user begins scrolling past the AI Overview, the system will cancel the expansion. This is designed to prevent users from losing their reading position on the page.

This move intensifies the ongoing debate about the future of search and traffic to publishers. By burying organic links deeper, Google may reduce click-through rates to external websites. The change prioritizes Google's own AI-generated content directly on the results page.

The long-term implications for web publishers and the overall search ecosystem are significant. If AI Overviews become the default interaction point, traditional SEO and traffic models could be disrupted. The evolution represents a major shift in how Google delivers information to its billions of users.
