The FreeCORE project has officially launched its first stable release, FreeCORE 15.0-U1, marking a significant development for users of the TrueNAS CORE operating system. This independent continuation of the TrueNAS CORE 13.3 system is built upon the FreeBSD platform, ensuring the legacy of open-source network-attached storage (NAS) software lives on. The release provides a direct upgrade path for existing TrueNAS CORE 13.3 systems, allowing them to transition in-place to the new version.

This initiative comes after iXsystems, the original developer, ended support for the legacy CORE product line. The FreeCORE project was established by community members to fill this gap, offering ongoing maintenance and updates. The project emphasizes that it is a fully independent effort, operating separately from iXsystems while giving full credit to the original authors of FreeNAS, TrueNAS CORE, FreeBSD, and OpenZFS in its source code licenses.

FreeCORE 15.0-U1 is built on a 13.3 FreeBSD base, providing a familiar environment for long-time users. The project currently maintains three development trains: the legacy 13.3 base, the current stable 15.0 train, and a preview of the next-generation 15.1 train. Users can download the installation ISO from the official FreeCORE website or upgrade their existing systems directly.

The availability of a supported upgrade path is crucial for users who depend on TrueNAS CORE for critical data storage but were left without updates. This move ensures continued security patches and feature updates for a segment of the open-source community. It also demonstrates the resilience of open-source projects, where community stewardship can extend software lifecycle.

Project communications are managed through an IRC channel on Libera.Chat and dedicated email addresses for general contact and security reports. The team has acknowledged the work of iXsystems and the broader FreeBSD and OpenZFS communities in its founding documentation.

Looking ahead, the FreeCORE project will continue its maintenance of the stable 15.0 train while developing features for the upcoming 15.1 release. The community-driven model will rely on user feedback and contributions to guide future development priorities for this essential storage operating system.
