Recently, the game "Marvel's Wolverine" sparked heated discussion among players due to an abnormal texture on a restroom sign. Some players noticed that the male restroom sign in the game appeared to have a visual effect of two overlapping human figures, and suspected that the asset was created by generative AI. In response, James Stevenson, community director at developer Insomniac Games, said on social media platform X that it was not AI-generated but a UV mapping error, and the team was preparing a fix.
Developed by Insomniac Games, "Marvel's Wolverine" officially launched on the PlayStation 5 platform earlier this week as a console exclusive. The game was highly anticipated before release, but after launch, player reviews have been mixed, with some players expressing different views on the game's technical performance and content design. The restroom sign issue has become a new focus of player discussion.
According to foreign media outlet Insider Gaming, the abnormal sign discovered by players was located on a restroom door in a certain scene in the game. On the male sign side, there was a blurry effect resembling two overlapping human silhouettes, clearly different from common clear signs. In recent years, the application of generative AI in game development has sparked widespread controversy, so some players immediately associated it with the possibility of AI-generated assets.
In his response, James Stevenson explicitly denied the AI-generated claim, emphasizing that there are no AI-generated assets in "Marvel's Wolverine." He attributed the issue to a UV mapping error, where improper texture coordinate mapping caused the sign to display abnormally. He said the team had noticed the problem and was preparing to fix it.
However, some users questioned the official explanation. Some players believe that such obvious overlapping on a flat sign is difficult to explain solely by a UV mapping error, because UV errors usually cause texture stretching or misalignment, rather than two complete human silhouettes appearing. Other players drew simple texture mapping diagrams, attempting to show that under a specific UV unwrapping method, the pattern could indeed be caused by overlapping texture coordinates. Insomniac Games has not yet released a more detailed technical explanation.
This incident reflects the high sensitivity of the player community toward the use of AI in game development. In recent years, multiple game companies have been exposed for using generative AI to create assets, sparking discussions about originality and employment impact. As an important studio under Sony, Insomniac Games' explicit denial of AI-generated assets has, to some extent, responded to players' concerns.
At present, the official has not yet announced the specific release time for the patch to fix the restroom sign. While waiting for the fix, players are also continuing to discuss the game's quality issues. For Insomniac Games, how to properly handle this minor controversy and respond to players' expectations for the game's overall performance will be a topic it needs to address in the future.
