SaaS platforms are experiencing an unexpected boom despite the so-called SaaSpocalypse, according to new data from Stripe. The payments company added more new platforms in the last three months than it did in the final six months of 2025. New platform businesses are up over 180% year over year during that period, and the pace is continuing.
The surge contradicts investor fears from earlier this year. Beginning in late January, software companies shed roughly $1 trillion in market capitalization in 30 days amid worries that agentic AI would commoditize software. Equity prices have since returned to roughly pre-sell-off levels. Stripe's payment volumes show a brief dip followed by swift recovery and continued growth among the 100 largest non-AI SaaS companies.
Stripe reviewed platforms that went live over the last three months using manual review, LLM classification, and heuristic checks. It found legitimate businesses with real customer activity. Platforms launched in January 2026 are reaching $1 million in payment volume at a higher rate than any previous cohort over the equivalent period.
Platforms are finding differentiation through deep industry knowledge. Aesthetic Record combines medical records, clinical workflows, patient engagement, and compliance for medical aesthetics practices. Bloomerang embeds nonprofit-specific workflows and donor relationship data into its CRM. Strong platforms share three traits: running key workflows, retaining valuable business information, and connecting operations to money movement.
"A high-signal indicator of platform defensibility is what breaks the day the customer turns it off," said Eric Noeth, partner at global private equity firm Advent. "If the business stopsāclaims don't pay, cars don't sell, trades don't settleāthe product is defensible and hard to dislodge." That operational centrality is what makes platforms difficult to replace.
AI is expanding what platforms can offer. As of August 2026, over 55% of new Stripe integrations involve some form of AI assistance. Platforms are using AI to automate intake, improve scheduling, personalize outreach, prioritize collections, and reduce risk.
The data suggests that while AI makes software easier to build, platforms embedded in industry-specific operations remain resilient. The current boom indicates the SaaSpocalypse narrative overstated the threat to SaaS businesses. Payment volumes show that real-world adoption is outpacing market pessimism.
