South Korea’s Hana Bank has issued a five-year, $100 million digital bond using Euroclear’s blockchain-based platform, according to a Yonhap News Agency report on Monday. The transaction marks the first digital bond issuance in South Korea to directly use Euroclear’s blockchain infrastructure. The bond was processed through Euroclear’s Digital Financial Market Infrastructure, with issuance, registration, and settlement all handled on a distributed ledger network.
The use of blockchain technology for bond allocation and payment settlement reportedly shortened the settlement process from three to five business days to the same day. The bond also connects to Euroclear’s existing global settlement network, allowing investors to trade it through their current accounts and trading systems. This integration aims to make digital bonds more accessible to traditional market participants.
The development highlights the growing role of blockchain in mainstream capital markets. By reducing settlement times and operational complexity, digital bonds can lower risk and improve liquidity. Hana Bank’s move signals that major commercial banks are beginning to embrace distributed ledger technology for real-world financial instruments.
Euroclear launched its Digital Securities Issuance service in October 2023, settling a 100 million euro digital bond issued by the World Bank’s lending arm, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. That three-year bond raised funds for sustainable development and was listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. Euroclear has also made its first Asia investment by taking a stake in Marketnode, further expanding its digital infrastructure footprint.
Neither Hana Bank nor Euroclear had responded to Cointelegraph’s requests for comment before publication. However, the successful issuance suggests that institutional demand for blockchain-based settlement is gaining momentum. The ability to settle on the same day could become a key selling point for future digital bond offerings.
Looking ahead, this transaction may encourage other South Korean banks to explore similar digital bond issuances. Euroclear’s expanding presence in Asia could accelerate the adoption of blockchain-based capital market infrastructure across the region. As more institutions test these systems, digital bonds could move from pilot projects to standard practice in global finance.
