According to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday local time, artificial intelligence company OpenAI is in talks with investors and plans to complete a new funding round of at least $30 billion before its initial public offering (IPO), at a corresponding company valuation of approximately $1.4 trillion. This will be another significant capital-raising operation by the ChatGPT developer before it goes public.
The market widely expects OpenAI to enter the public markets next year, and investors therefore want to commit additional capital to the company before its IPO. Bloomberg reported that, if the new funding round ultimately goes through, the funds will serve as a bridge round, paving the way for the subsequent initial public offering.
In terms of performance, although Anthropic’s growth momentum briefly surpassed OpenAI’s earlier this year, OpenAI has since July shifted its strategic focus back to core business areas such as code generation. Its annualized revenue growth reached 70%, and its annualized revenue rose to $40 billion in August. This strong revenue growth has provided substantial support for its new funding round.
Notably, OpenAI previously completed a $122 billion funding round in March, at a valuation of $852 billion. The outside world had originally believed that this would be its final private fundraising round before going public, and the market had expected at the time that OpenAI would complete its IPO this year.
However, Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has now ruled out the possibility of OpenAI going public in 2026, saying that the company will prioritize implementing artificial intelligence safety-related work. In a recent interview with Forbes, Altman discussed warnings from researchers in the field of safety about the existential risks that artificial intelligence may pose. He said: “If, by the end of this decade, there is roughly a 10% probability that artificial intelligence will wipe out all of humanity, I think that is an unacceptable thing.”
From its valuation of $852 billion in March to the $1.4 trillion valuation currently under discussion, OpenAI’s valuation has increased substantially in just over half a year, reflecting the capital market’s strong recognition of its business prospects. If the new funding round proceeds smoothly, it will further strengthen OpenAI’s capital advantage in the global artificial intelligence race.
At present, none of the parties involved have announced the final outcome or a specific timetable for the funding discussions. As the IPO approaches, how OpenAI will balance the advancement of its commercial expansion with the fulfillment of its artificial intelligence safety commitments will remain a focus of continued market attention.
