Google Research's Kauldron, a JAX training library marketed for research velocity and modularity, is now the focus of a new coding guide testing those claims. The tutorial installs Kauldron 1.4.2 and builds a full training pipeline from scratch. Everything runs on a CPU runtime with no dataset download, using synthetic in-memory data.
Kauldron sits on top of Flax and Optax but describes itself as glue rather than a framework. Four components do the work: konfig, kontext, ktyping, and kd.train. The guide's first half examines what each mechanism actually buys a researcher.
konfig turns an experiment into a tree of plain dictionaries that round-trip through JSON, making configurations portable and diffable. One compatibility patch is needed today: jax 0.10.1 moved jax._src.prng while etils up to 1.14.0 still reaches for it. Without a two-line replacement, a Trainer raises AttributeError before finishing a single step.
kontext wires components together with string key paths, so a loss never imports the model it scores. The runtime shape checker binds named axes across arguments and reports what they were bound to when something mismatches. Together, these keep modules decoupled and errors legible.
The tutorial then writes a custom loss and a custom metric in the framework's expected shape. It trains a real Trainer on synthetic data and monitors an inner model layer without editing the model itself.
A five-variant sweep follows, with every experiment differing by a single config line. The run also checkpoints itself and resumes where it stopped, demonstrating Kauldron's modular plumbing in practice. Variants can be compared without rewriting code.
The guide suggests that configuration-as-data and string-based wiring may reduce experiment friction for JAX researchers. Broader adoption will likely depend on how quickly compatibility patches like the etils fix are upstreamed. It is a compact template for readable JAX training.
