Meta announced at its 2026 annual developer conference the launch of the 2026 VR Start Developer Competition, with a total prize pool of US$1 million (approximately RMB 6.72 million at the current exchange rate). The competition encourages developers to create compatible content for the upcoming Meta VR Glasses headset. It is open to developers worldwide and covers areas including entertainment, gaming, and productivity. Meta hopes to use the competition to expand the content ecosystem available for its new headset and provide users with a more complete virtual reality experience.

The competition will run from the date of the announcement through November 18, 2026, during which developers may submit their entries. Works that meet the entry requirements will receive prizes ranging from US$20,000 to US$100,000 (approximately RMB 134,000 to RMB 672,000 at the current exchange rate). The winners are expected to be announced around December 11, 2026, at which point the entire US$1 million prize pool will be awarded to the selected projects.

The competition welcomes both entirely new projects and existing works that are already in development. For game entries, Meta is particularly interested in works suited to seated experiences that can be played without traditional controllers, including puzzle, strategy, casual, social, and narrative games. These requirements reflect Meta’s preference for lightweight content that can be played for extended periods.

Meta explicitly stipulates that every competition game must be playable from beginning to end entirely through hand-based controls, while support for Touch controllers is not mandatory. Meta says developers should prioritize the built-in hand and eye-tracking capabilities of Meta VR Glasses to provide users with a complete interactive experience that requires no controllers. This means hand tracking will serve as one of the core evaluation criteria for entries in the competition.

Meta also emphasizes that small development teams without marketing budgets can gain additional exposure by participating in a competition like this, helping their works attract more users to the relevant store pages. Teams may also use their competition entries as concrete project examples when seeking project partnerships or recruiting members in the future. For independent developers, participating provides both financial support and an opportunity to enter the Meta ecosystem.

The timing of the competition is closely related to the upcoming release of Meta VR Glasses. The headset relies on its built-in hand- and eye-tracking capabilities for interaction. Although it supports Quest Touch Plus controllers, players must purchase them separately. As a result, developing content around controller-free interaction gives developers a direct route into the new platform.

In terms of development support, because Meta VR Glasses and Quest use the same operating system, developers can use Quest 3 directly to prototype their projects in addition to physically using the relevant devices. Meta also provides tools such as Meta XR Simulator, Meta Spatial Simulator, and Immersive Web Emulator, which support Unity, Unreal Engine, and other development environments and help developers create various games and applications using different engines. As the November 2026 submission deadline approaches, these tools will become important support for competition teams as they finalize their entries.
