Demand for stablecoin payouts from global workers is rapidly reshaping cross-border payments, according to a new Stripe survey of more than 2,300 independent workers across 20 countries. The findings show that 57% of gig workers, contractors, creators, freelancers and marketplace sellers would accept stablecoin payouts if their platforms offered them, citing frustration with high fees and slow settlement on traditional cross-border rails.

Currently, only 18% of independent workers in emerging markets receive stablecoin payouts, leaving a large gap between supply and appetite. Beyond cost and speed, workers in Latin America, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa view stablecoins β€” tokens pegged to fiat currencies such as the US dollar β€” as a hedge against local inflation and a route to accessing dollars.

Regional demand is driven by specific, urgent needs. In Latin America, a third of workers said stablecoins could protect them against currency volatility in countries such as Argentina and Colombia. In Africa, where 40% of people are unbanked and 90% of transactions are conducted in cash, 72% of sub-Saharan workers receive payouts to a digital wallet, and 38% cite receiving payments as their primary stablecoin use.

The Middle East shows the highest willingness to adopt stablecoins at 69%, with 53% of workers saying the technology can cut costs and speed up cross-border transfers. Workers also have clear requests for platforms: 70% want to earn yield on their platform balances, making it the top feature request, while 53% want simple guidance on buying, storing and using stablecoins.

Friction in wallet setup remains a barrier, but evidence suggests it is solvable. In one Stripe pilot, 90% of independent workers chose to receive payouts in Link, Stripe's digital wallet, rather than configuring their own.

Platforms including DoorDash, Deel, Ramp and Meta already enable stablecoin payouts, signalling growing industry momentum. Stripe's report, "Workers across the platform economy are fueling demand for stablecoins," offers regional breakdowns, platform recommendations and practical implementation steps for companies seeking to respond.
