Hitachi and Germany’s Agile Robots have agreed to develop physical AI for complex factory tasks requiring human judgment and adaptability. The collaboration combines Hitachi’s AI, manufacturing and edge-computing technology with Agile Robots’ robotics platform. Hitachi plans to commercialize the resulting systems globally through HMAX Industry.
The agreement follows Hitachi’s separate partnership with Fanuc, reinforcing its push to build an HMAX Industry ecosystem. Both collaborations center on edge AI semiconductors and automating difficult production work. Their wider objective is to let machines recognize changing conditions, make decisions and execute more processes autonomously.
Munich-based Agile Robots brings robotic arms, mobile robots and the Agile One humanoid. It also provides AgileCore, an AI-driven software platform, and infrastructure that collects data from real-world robot operations. Its systems already serve automotive manufacturing, healthcare and data centers.
Targeted jobs include parts handling, machine loading, machining, assembly, production changeovers and moving materials between processes. Such work often requires human judgment because parts, equipment and operating conditions differ. Hitachi said deployments will provide operational data and know-how for improving its physical AI solutions.
Hitachi executive Yoshimitsu Takagi said the integration could enable autonomous factory operation, not just intelligent robots. Agile Robots founder and CEO Zhaopeng Chen said the partners aim to bring physical intelligence into production environments worldwide. Both companies presented real-world deployments as central to improving performance.
Hitachi will pair its edge AI semiconductors with Agile Robots’ systems. According to Hitachi, the chips process information comparable to robot vision and touch at high speed while using relatively little power. Its Connective Industries Sector and Strategic Social Innovation Business unit will jointly oversee technology development and customer projects.
The partnership links hardware, software, factory equipment and operational data in one commercial framework. Broader use could follow, but Hitachi announced no timetable, investment or customer deployments.
