Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, has unveiled a 12.37-megawatt solar carport installation, marking it as the largest solar carport in California and one of the biggest single-site commercial solar carport projects in the United States.
The project was developed in partnership with solar panel company Solar Optimum, along with DSD Renewables, and construction officially broke ground on November 1, 2023. It follows earlier solar installations at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Northern California and Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, showing a growing commitment to renewable energy across the chain.
The installation features 22,908 RECOM bifacial solar panels spread across 36 carport structures, covering roughly 637,000 square feet. Bifacial panels capture sunlight from both sides, including light reflected from the ground, boosting efficiency. The canopies provide shade for about 4,315 parking spaces — 3,544 for guests and 771 for employees.
The system is expected to generate around 20.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to offset the annual power use of both the amusement park and neighboring Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles. A 2 MW/8 MWh battery system stores excess electricity for later use, offering approximately four hours of discharge at rated output. The installation also includes 109 EV charging connectors across guest and employee lots.
The parks remain connected to utility Southern California Edison, drawing grid power when onsite generation falls short and exporting surplus electricity when demand and battery storage are covered. The ultimate plan is to offset 100% of annual electricity consumption. Because the panels occupy space already used for parking, the same land accommodates cars, provides shade, and generates clean electricity.
With the project complete, Six Flags Magic Mountain sets a notable benchmark for how large entertainment venues can integrate renewable energy infrastructure into everyday operations while delivering practical benefits to visitors.
