Deep Robotics has deployed DR02 humanoid robots in Hangzhou’s Xihu District to test traffic direction and public guidance in real-world conditions. The field trials began in early October and took place amid heavy crowds, vehicle traffic and sustained rain. Locations included Xixi National Wetland Park and intersections along Zheda Road and West Wenyi Road in Lingyin Subdistrict.

The company said the trials aimed to determine whether humanoids can handle repetitive traffic and advisory duties. That could allow human personnel to focus on traffic organization, emergency response and enforcement. The tests are part of a broader effort to move robots beyond controlled environments.

At intersections, the DR02 directed traffic, helped maintain order and assisted visitors. Its IP66 rating protects against rain and dust, so Deep Robotics used wet weather to test outdoor endurance. The robot relies on onboard environmental perception and motion control to navigate autonomously.

The DR02 avoided pedestrians and vehicles and adjusted its position and hand signals as traffic changed. In busy tourist areas, it served as a multilingual guide. It answered questions about routes, transportation and nearby attractions while giving safety reminders.

Peak-hour trials focused on identifying common violations and unsafe behavior. Deep Robotics said the robot’s visual-perception systems can detect e-bike riders without helmets, overloaded e-bikes, pedestrians crossing designated lines and vehicles stopping beyond marked lines. It then provides voice prompts to warn people.

Deep Robotics said data collected from the deployments will be used to refine the DR02 for traffic-support applications. The company plans to continue real-world testing to improve environmental perception, motion control, interaction and task execution. It is also exploring additional uses in traffic management, public services and other urban operations.
