Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission finalized rules on Thursday to permit crypto exchange-traded funds on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Initially limited to Bitcoin and Ether. Effective Oct. 16, 2026.

The framework allows Thai investors to access digital assets via the stock market. Crypto ETFs must trade exclusively on SET. Foreign-linked products like depositary receipts not initially permitted. Brokers remain barred from facilitating overseas crypto ETFs for retail investors except institutions and ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

SEC amended rules to let mutual funds and private funds invest in Thai-established crypto ETFs. Previously they could invest only in foreign crypto ETFs. It also prohibits margin loans for crypto ETF purchases. Fund assets must be held with SEC-regulated digital asset custodians.

Investors must receive product information and confirm risk understanding before trading. Crypto ETFs must be passive vehicles tracking a single crypto price. They must maintain net exposure to one cryptocurrency averaging at least 80% of NAV each accounting year.

Attakrit Chimphlapibul, co-founder of Bitkub Group, said U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF launches created new avenues for institutional and retail investors to easily access digital assets. The Thai framework opens a new route for exposure through the stock market. He spoke to Money and Banking on Thursday.

The SEC consulted on proposed principles in April and May and on draft regulations in August and September. Most respondents supported the proposals, the regulator said. The rules are set to take effect next week.

The move could deepen Thailand’s regulated crypto market while maintaining strict safeguards. It remains unclear when the first Thai crypto ETFs will list. Market participants will watch whether the framework attracts institutional and retail demand.
