Nearly half of Asia-Pacific consumers are likely to use stablecoins within five years, a Visa survey found. The payments company polled 14,250 people. It said 46% expect to adopt fiat-pegged cryptocurrencies by 2031, up from 16% in the past year.

Interest is growing for everyday purchases, travel and cross-border transfers. Asia-Pacific has about 2.5 billion middle-class consumers, a major payments opportunity. Nischint Sanghavi, Visa’s Asia Pacific digital currencies head, called the shift “meaningful.”

A knowledge gap remains. Only 6% of respondents accurately understood how stablecoins work. About 49% of those aware of them thought they could only buy or sell other cryptocurrencies.

Fraud and scams were the top barrier among aware non-users. Still, 49% believed stablecoins could become a common way to move money across borders within five years. Education and trust are critical to adoption.

Stablecoin providers, banks and card networks are competing for the region’s payments opportunity. Asia already leads global stablecoin flows and onchain activity, according to CoinDesk research. Visa has expanded its stablecoin settlement network and seeks to support more tokens and blockchains.

Visa partner Reap is preparing local-currency stablecoins for 24/7 foreign-exchange settlement in Asia and other markets. Those could include Hong Kong dollar, won and yen tokens. The effort reflects industry interest in faster settlement.

Sanghavi said consumers are beginning to see how stablecoins could support how they spend and move money. “The opportunity now is to turn that interest into trusted and familiar payment experiences that work at scale,” he said. The research confirms what Visa has been building toward.

If education improves and fraud concerns ease, stablecoin use could rise sharply by 2031. Payment companies are racing to convert curiosity into practical products. Without trust, the gap between interest and adoption may remain.
