A tampered Ledger attack that caused an estimated $93.4 million in Asian losses has reportedly reached Europe. X user Johannes posted photos of a modified Ledger bought two weeks ago from MediaMarkt. The implant resembled an earlier CryptoBilis-linked version, and no funds were taken.
Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles said the European device’s antenna is labeled “Eurasian version.” That suggests separate implants were made for regions using different mobile frequencies. Ledger has not confirmed the device belongs to the same campaign.
The attack surfaced after CryptoBilis, an authorized Ledger reseller in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, shipped modified devices. The tampering lets attackers read seed phrases and steal funds while the device still passes authenticity checks. Ledger asked CryptoBilis to suspend sales and advised recent buyers to move assets.
Yfarmx estimated $93.4 million was stolen across 471 addresses, though Ledger has not confirmed that figure. Ledger said the volume of impacted devices is limited. It has not confirmed whether the European unit is connected.
Separately, Veria Labs earned a $250,000 bounty for uncovering an XRP overflow bug hidden since 2015. Its AI agent found two low-severity bugs in rippled and chained them into a larger exploit. Cayden Liao said one transaction could have minted over 18 trillion XRP, 184 times the total supply.
The bug was reported on September 22 and patched by RippleX three days later. No evidence suggests it was exploited. Liao said it risked the full $94 billion XRP market cap, more than 60 times the largest crypto hack on record.
Vitalik Buterin backed researcher Justin Drake’s warning that AI advances could undermine blockchain cryptography before quantum computers do. Buterin said people should not scramble to move funds today but should take AI-accelerated math risks seriously. Drake urged “bunker mode” after OpenAI released hundreds of new mathematical findings.
