Starknet, the Ethereum layer-2 network developed by StarkWare, has launched a wallet privacy feature called Shadow Accounts that allows users to engage with decentralized finance (DeFi) applications without publicly linking those activities to their main wallets. The feature creates separate, persistent addresses for individual applications, giving users distinct onchain identities for different DeFi positions. StarkWare announced the rollout as part of a broader push to bring privacy tools to blockchain users.

The launch addresses a longstanding tension in public blockchains: while transparency supports verifiability, it can expose users’ financial strategies, holdings, and trading histories. Starknet’s new feature aims to obscure the connection between a user’s primary wallet and the Shadow Account used for DeFi activity. However, the network emphasized that transactions, balances, and positions associated with Shadow Accounts remain publicly visible onchain, so the tool does not provide full anonymity.

To use Shadow Accounts, individuals fund them with shielded balances held in Starknet’s STRK20 privacy pool. That pool, introduced earlier, supports private transfers and shielded token balances. By drawing from shielded balances, users can maintain lending, trading, or other DeFi positions under different onchain identities without directly revealing the source wallet. The design keeps the funding link hidden while preserving onchain visibility of the resulting activity.

Once integrated into a DeFi application, the feature lets users connect their wallets, switch from public to private mode, and deposit assets into a vault. Their Shadow Accounts then maintain those positions until the user withdraws funds back into a shielded balance. StarkWare said the functionality could eventually extend beyond vaults to areas such as liquidity provision, lending, borrowing, staking, derivatives trading, prediction markets, and NFT marketplaces.

The Shadow Accounts launch follows StarkWare’s June introduction of the STRK20 privacy framework. Later that month, the company demonstrated a Private Know Your Customer system that allowed users to verify personal information without revealing full identity documents. Those initiatives signal a sustained effort to build privacy-preserving infrastructure on Starknet while keeping compliance use cases in view.

The new feature could appeal to DeFi users who want to separate their public wallet identities from active trading or lending positions. It may also raise questions about how privacy tools interact with regulatory expectations and anti-money laundering rules. Because Shadow Account activity remains visible onchain, analysts can still track positions, but they cannot easily attribute them to a main wallet.

Adoption will depend on whether DeFi applications integrate the feature and whether users trust the privacy guarantees of the STRK20 pool. If successful, Shadow Accounts could become a model for other layer-2 networks seeking to balance transparency with user privacy. StarkWare’s recent quantum roadmap announcement further indicates the company is positioning Starknet for long-term technological evolution. The coming months will show whether privacy-focused DeFi features gain traction across the ecosystem.
