On October 15, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook. The two sides exchanged views on topics including China-U.S. economic and trade relations, artificial intelligence development, and Apple's business in China. The meeting drew attention because on the same day, Cook confirmed in Shanghai the latest progress of Apple Intelligence in the Chinese market.
Wang Wentao said that under the guidance of the consensus between the two heads of state to build a "constructive strategic stable relationship between China and the U.S. based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity," China-U.S. economic and trade consultations had achieved positive results. China advocates that AI development be safe and controllable, inclusive and for the good, with cooperative governance. He hoped Apple would play a bridging role in communication and contribute to promoting the sustained, stable, and positive development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations.
Wang Wentao also pointed out that China is currently steadfastly expanding high-level opening up, continuously optimizing the business environment, expanding and upgrading the consumer market, and steadily growing the green supply chain. This will provide broader space for multinational companies investing in China to transition toward intelligence, green development, and innovation. He hoped Apple would continue to cultivate the Chinese market deeply and share the development opportunities of Chinese-style modernization.
Cook said Apple is optimistic about China's development prospects and will further expand its business in China. He is willing to play a positive role in promoting the stable and healthy development of U.S.-China economic and trade relations. These remarks show that Apple hopes to continue expanding its business in China and maintain a stable China-U.S. economic and trade environment.
According to an earlier report today by ITHome, Cook confirmed in Shanghai today during interviews with media including The Paper and Jiemian News that Apple Intelligence and the related Alibaba Qwen large model have been approved. The feature will be released as a test version for Chinese users later in October. This progress emerged on the same day as the AI topic involved in the Ministry of Commerce meeting.
Cook said the first batch of features includes real-time translation, writing tools, photo cleanup tools, etc., but Siri AI is not within the scope of this release. He said: "We are very happy that the first batch of core Apple Intelligence features can be gradually launched." Cook's remarks further clarified the initial scope of Apple Intelligence's implementation in the Chinese market.
From the content of the meeting, China is focused on China-U.S. economic and trade relations, AI governance cooperation, and the investment environment for multinational companies in China. Apple, meanwhile, emphasized that it is optimistic about China's development prospects and plans to expand its business in China. As the Apple Intelligence test version is about to be released, its performance in the Chinese market and the subsequent direction of China-U.S. economic and trade interactions will continue to attract outside attention.
