Valve is rolling out a major new Steam feature called "achievement sets," which lets developers group achievements separately for a base game and its downloadable content. The feature is available now in the latest Steam client beta. Each set gets its own dedicated progress bar, giving players a clearer view of what they have finished.
Until now, Steam displayed every achievement for a game in one long, flat list. As popular titles add DLC, those lists can swell to hundreds of entries, making overall progress hard to track. Achievement sets break that single list into smaller, developer-created chunks.
Valve says players still unlock achievements by playing as usual. When browsing unlocked achievements afterward, Steam splits the list into the developer-created sets. That makes it easier to see what is complete and to find related achievements to unlock next.
Completing an entire set awards a "set complete" trophy visible on the player's profile. Valve is also refreshing the Steam Achievements page, adding a summary of overall progress, progress within each set, and details on individual achievements.
Steam will support seasonal achievement sets that developers can archive, too. Valve says the temporary nature opens up fun possibilities, such as achievements for season-based games or time-limited holiday events.
A handful of games already support the feature, including Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Crusader Kings III, Euro Truck Simulator 2, American Truck Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, PowerWash Simulator, Against the Storm and DREDGE.
The update is part of Valve's continuing effort to modernize Steam's library and social features. Because it is still in beta, availability and final details could change before a wider release.
