Apple has finally unveiled its long-rumored foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, during its “Surprise and shine” event. The device features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR screen, marking Apple’s first entry into the foldable market. It starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB model, with prices increasing for higher storage configurations.
The iPhone Duo arrives years after Samsung and Google launched their own foldables, making Apple a late entrant to the category. Internally, it runs the same A20 Pro chipset as the iPhone 18 Pro and includes a 48-megapixel fusion camera, though it lacks variable aperture. The phone is IP68 rated for water and dust resistance and features Ceramic Shield 2 on its back and Ceramic Shield on the front display.
Instead of Face ID, the Duo uses a Touch ID sensor on the power button. It has two rear cameras: a main lens and a wide-angle lens. Apple Pencil support is scheduled to arrive later this year. The inner screen has a “nano-texture” finish that reduces glare, and Apple says there is barely any visible crease.
Apple completely revamped iOS 27’s controls and apps for the foldable, including placing the dock on the side of the phone. The device also displays a flashy opening animation when unfolded. In a hands-on, the inner screen’s matte finish handled glare well, the folding mechanism felt smooth, and the crease was almost impossible to find by touch. The 5.4-inch outer screen looks petite by modern slab-phone standards.
Apple said preorder demand for the iPhone Duo has been “extraordinary.” Delivery estimates slipped into 2027 in less than an hour after preorders opened at 8AM ET on Friday. At the time of writing, Apple’s website showed late January delivery dates for every configuration.
The foldable is slated to launch in stores on October 23rd. Apple typically reserves some units for in-store availability, so customers who missed online preorders might still find one at an Apple Store. The company did not disclose whether inventory would be available for those who could not secure preorders.
Bloomberg reported Apple’s statement: “The pre-order demand for iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary.” Apple added that it is working hard to get the product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible and will continue accepting orders online. The company also said its teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores worldwide to experience the iPhone Duo and the full iPhone line-up.
With preorders already delayed into next year, the iPhone Duo appears poised to become a significant product for Apple despite its high price and late arrival. The strong demand suggests that Apple’s loyal customer base is eager to try its take on foldable technology. Future updates, including Apple Pencil support, could further extend the device’s appeal.
