Elon Musk said Tuesday that merging SpaceX and Tesla would be "a good idea," speaking during SpaceX's third-quarter earnings call. The billionaire, who leads both companies, noted the decision ultimately rests with shareholders, who must support any deal. His comments came during an investor Q&A session.

The merger talk follows a busy year for SpaceX. In February, it acquired Musk's AI firm xAI, and in June, it went public with the largest IPO on record. These moves show SpaceX's expansion beyond aerospace.

At shareholders' request, both companies formed special committees of independent directors to discuss a merger. Musk said he is a "conflicted party" and cannot participate in the discussions. The committees have not yet agreed on terms.

Musk admitted there is no guarantee a deal will happen, but he sees merit in combining the firms. He cited the pursuit of "superintelligence" and potential cooperation in software, chip design, Terafab, robotics, mass to orbit with the Starmind constellation, and connectivity.

While merging a space business with an automotive one may seem odd, both SpaceX and Tesla are rapidly transitioning into artificial intelligence. This shift highlights potential synergies as they venture into AI-driven technologies.

Reactions are mixed, with some analysts questioning the logic. However, Musk's vision of a unified entity focused on superintelligence has drawn attention. Shareholder support will be crucial for any deal to proceed.

Looking ahead, the special committees will continue evaluating terms. If successful, the consolidation would create a conglomerate spanning aerospace, automotive, and AI. The outcome hinges on whether shareholders see value in Musk's vision.
