Warhound, a new Texas-based startup, launched with $200 million to create genetically enhanced working dogs for the U.S. military, law enforcement, and emergency first responders. It was founded by Palmer Luckey of Anduril and Ben Lamm, cofounder of Colossal Biosciences. Warhound aims to rebuild America’s domestic supply of elite working dogs and reduce reliance on European breeders.

Lamm told WIRED that Warhound is already gene-editing its first batch of dogs. The startup collected blood samples from top-performing U.S. military, police, and first responder dogs and intends to clone them. Breeds will be mostly Belgian Malinois, with some Labradors and shepherds, Lamm said. The first puppies are expected in early 2027.

Initial gene edits will focus on eliminating common health conditions affecting these breeds, such as hip dysplasia. Later, Lamm envisions incorporating olfactory receptor genes from wolves to enhance the dogs’ scent capabilities. Warhound will also equip its canines with Anduril’s advanced cybernetic Augments, software, and battlefield situational awareness.

Lamm clarified that current plans involve tools such as advanced body armor rather than embedding computers inside the dogs. Asked whether the dogs would have lasers, he declined to comment on Anduril’s plans. David Spirk, a former Department of Defense chief data officer who most recently worked at Palantir, is Warhound’s chief executive. Investors include In-Q-Tel, Sequoia Capital, and ARK Invest.

Colossal Biosciences holds an ownership stake, while Luckey and Anduril do not have equity. Lamm serves on the board, but neither founder is involved in day-to-day operations. Luckey and Lamm worked on the project for over a year before recently taking the company out of stealth.

Lamm compared the concept to “the Captain America dog program with the Ironman tech program on top.” Warhound plans to operate under American Humane Society guidance. Health-focused edits will precede broader enhancements.
