Police in Charlotte, North Carolina, stopped two men who were riding a couch down South Tryon Street over the weekend. The couch appeared to be powered by two Lime electric scooters. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shared the unusual encounter in a recent social media post. Officers with the department's EDU unit encountered the contraption and pulled the riders over.
Electric scooters have become common for short commutes and deliveries, but using them to transport furniture is far from typical. The department's post described the situation as "certainly a first." A photo shared by police shows a full-size sofa perched across two Lime shared scooters. The exact method of attachment and steering remains unclear.
Despite the ambiguity, the riders apparently traveled far enough to attract police attention. This suggests some level of coordination between the two pilots. Police did not publicly identify the two men. It is also unclear whether either rider was cited or arrested.
The incident raises obvious safety concerns about piloting living-room furniture on public streets. Police acknowledged the creativity but reminded the public to prioritize safety. "No matter what you're 'driving' (using that term extremely loosely), please think about safety first," the department wrote. They also joked that it was "probably best to leave the mobile furniture displays to IKEA."
The department's humorous post highlighted the inventive but risky use of shared micromobility devices. Lime scooters are designed for individual transport, not as propulsion for couches. While the stunt may have been comfortable, it posed potential hazards to the riders and others. The reaction online likely mixed amusement with concern.
It remains to be seen whether any charges will follow. The incident serves as a reminder of how people creatively adapt electric scooters. However, police continue to emphasize safety over novelty. For now, the two men's couch ride stands as a unique example of micromobility misuse.
