Anduril now says its BlueChip laptop, built with Qualcomm, will meet Buy American standards at its 2027 launch. The defense contractor committed that at least 65 percent of components will be made in the United States. The companies announced their US manufacturing partnership on Tuesday.
No major US computer company, including Apple, Dell, HP, or Microsoft, currently builds laptops in the United States. Anduril and Qualcomm also set a long-term goal of a fully domestic supply chain. Questions remain over whether the first model will be manufactured or merely designed and assembled domestically.
On Monday, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey said the companies have a technical roadmap to reach 100 percent domestic production over time. He said the laptop would comply with military requirements and exceed the Buy American Actâs bar. Asked about the launch percentage, Luckey first answered âTBD.â
The Buy American Act dates to 1933. It was updated under President Joe Biden to require at least 65 percent domestic component costs for a product to count as US-made. That threshold rises to 75 percent in 2029.
Anduril communications VP Shannon Prior later confirmed the 65 percent figure for 2027. The press release says the first laptop will be âdesigned and assembledâ in the United States, not necessarily fully manufactured. Luckey argued many federal agencies buy computers under Buy American waivers.
A compliant US-made laptop could strengthen Andurilâs position in military and government contracts. It could also pressure larger PC makers to rethink offshore supply chains. Federal agencies must buy domestic products unless they obtain waivers.
Qualcomm president and CEO Cristiano Amon joined Luckey in announcing the partnership. Andurilâs roadmap targets full domestic production, while the Buy American threshold reaches 75 percent in 2029. Success will depend on when US memory, processor, and display production lines come online.
