Cloudflare has launched a beta Web Search API through its AI Gateway, giving AI applications a unified way to retrieve live web results. Available via REST APIs and Cloudflare Workers, the service adds logging, access controls, billing, and bring-your-own-provider keys. It connects AI agents to search providers Ceramic.ai, Exa, and Linkup.

The API is meant to solve a common agent failure: guessing URLs and then calling curl, which can return 404 errors. Cloudflare says agents need current news, API changes, and technical documentation as inference context. The unified interface logs searches alongside model inference.

Cloudflare’s Michelle Chen, Sam Else, and Gabriel Massadas explained that random URL guessing is inefficient. Providers must follow Cloudflare’s “Verified bots” requirements and return source links with search responses. Cloudflare calls these rules net-positive for a fair Internet and creator control.

Applications can use a REST endpoint with an AI Gateway authentication token and a specified search provider. Cloudflare says it will identify providers supporting Zero Data Retention. It also offers search at providers’ list prices without additional markup.

The launch drew attention on Hacker News, where users debated search quality and data-retention limits. Simon Willison asked whether APIs allow storage and resyndication of results, calling restrictions a significant limitation for agent systems and share-transcript features. He noted such terms are often buried.

Maximilian Goisser, CTO and co-founder of Erato Labs, said Cloudflare is approaching trusted main cloud supplier status for existing customers. He argued that billing through an incumbent avoids a fresh procurement process. The comment highlights Cloudflare’s positioning in AI infrastructure.

Cloudflare plans to add native server tools to AI Gateway, starting with web search. Until those tools arrive, developers can integrate web search into workflows using Cloudflare Workers. The beta signals growing demand for governed, live web access in AI applications.
