Alex Lee joined Magic Patterns as its first engineer, technically employee number two after a sales hire. He had run his own company, Iago, and worked with co-founder Teddy at Robinhood. Lee started part-time before officially joining the AI-first design startup.

Magic Patterns helps product designers create interactive mockups and prototypes. More than 3,000 product teams use the tool. Lee said the problem space pulled him in because he had encountered it while building features at Iago. "It's pretty clear that Figma is going to be replaced," he said.

Lee stayed in touch with Teddy and co-founder Alex Danilowicz after Robinhood. He said he aligned with their philosophies and wanted to grow with the company. He also wanted to watch engineering, design and product roles blend in an AI world.

Lee said engineers at the startup own problems, not just features. "You're not just a code monkey, you're a product person," he said. Beyond coding, he improved onboarding, spoke with customers and handled support. After noticing users built slide decks to present designs, he built a new file type over a weekend and shipped it.

Lee also hit Hacker News' front page with a work side project: an agent that builds Rollercoaster Tycoon-influenced theme parks from a prompt. His toolkit includes Cursor and Claude Code, Cursor connected to Slack for small fixes, and an internal reviewer agent called Patterson. He uses three clones of one GitHub repository to work in parallel.

Magic Patterns now has ten people; Lee interviews candidates and is forward-deployed engineer for enterprise customers, especially Design Systems, the top-requested enterprise feature. He said startup transparency surprised him: everyone knows financials and growth rate. He advises early-career engineers to make a polarized bet. The company is hiring an engineer to build the world's best AI design agents.
