On November 4, the game mod sharing platform Nexus Mods announced an update to its platform policy on the use of generative AI, requiring creators to publicly disclose the specific use of AI tools in mod creation. The platform also stated that it will not impose a blanket ban on AI mods, but will instead establish new management rules to seek a balance among community users with different positions. The new rules focus on transparent disclosure rather than a one-size-fits-all ban.

Nexus Mods is a game mod sharing platform. As generative AI enters mod creation, the community holds different positions on issues such as the degree of AI involvement and the experience. The platform says that the basic starting point for its related decisions is "supporting human creativity." Site head Foledinho emphasized that the platform will not directly ban all AI mods.

Under the new rules, creators who use AI tools in mod creation must explain in detail the specific parts in which AI participates. Other users can learn the relevant information before downloading and decide for themselves whether to accept it. The disclosure requirements cover the specific circumstances of AI participation in mod creation.

For creators of mods that have already been published, the platform provides a 60-day grace period to complete supplementary information. Subsequent review will be conducted manually. The platform also encourages users to report mods that fail to disclose AI usage as required.

Foledinho said that as long as AI-generated mods meet the platform's requirements regarding usage permissions, information transparency, content presentation methods, and user behavior, they can still be published on Nexus Mods. The platform will not directly ban all AI mods. The new policy aims to balance different positions within the community.

The new rules will affect creators who use AI tools to make mods and users who download mods. Creators need to supplement disclosure information, and users gain more room for informed choice. Manual review and user reporting mechanisms will add platform management steps.

Foledinho admitted that the new policy may not necessarily satisfy all users' expectations in the community. As AI technology continues to develop, the platform's related policies will also be adjusted accordingly. Nexus Mods hopes to continuously seek a balance between supporting human creativity and allowing AI mods to be published.
