Apple has reportedly begun cutting the daily budgets its engineering teams can spend on artificial intelligence tools, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. In October, the company lowered the daily AI spending cap for engineering teams from $300 to $200, according to the outlet. Bloomberg also reported that further reductions are planned.
The reported move marks a notable shift for Apple, which has worked to embed AI into its engineering processes. The company has not publicly confirmed the budget changes. TechCrunch said it contacted Apple for comment.
The cuts are not limited to the first reduction. Some allowances could fall to $100 a day, sources told Bloomberg. Outside engineering, Apple is reportedly weighing a daily limit as low as $25.
The figures show how quickly corporate AI budgeting is changing. Earlier this year, companies encouraged staff to use AI as much as possible in pursuit of vaguely defined efficiency gains. That frenzy was short-lived as token bills came due.
Appleās reported rationing reflects broader concerns about AI economics. There is an apparent gap between what AI costs to build and run and the productivity gains it is supposed to generate. Those gains often remain unclear.
The changes could affect how Apple engineers use AI in daily work. A lower cap may force teams to prioritize specific tasks and tools. It may also signal that even large technology companies are tightening AI spending.
Appleās plans remain unconfirmed, and the company has not responded publicly. The reported limits suggest AI usage is moving from open-ended experimentation toward cost control. How Apple balances efficiency and innovation will be closely watched.
