On November 5, Cat Wu (Catherine Wu), core product lead for Claude Code and Cowork, announced that she will join OpenAI to lead core product management. The change comes at a critical moment as Anthropic prepares for an IPO and quickly drew attention in Silicon Valley. OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger and OpenAI o-series model developer Noam Brown offered congratulations in the comments.

Cat Wu comes from a technical background. From 2013 to 2017, she studied computer science at Princeton University and spent time as an exchange student at ETH Zurich in Switzerland; during her undergraduate years, she and classmates developed the collaborative whiteboard app Scratchwork. After graduation, she first joined YouTube in a technical role. A year later, she joined Scale AI as a product engineer, participating as an early employee in building enterprise products and scaling operations. In 2020, she moved to the startup Dagster as head of engineering, responsible for building the commercial product Dagster Cloud.

From October 2021 to August 2024, Cat Wu served as a venture partner at Index Ventures, responsible for investments in enterprise software, data infrastructure, developer tools, and AI startups. In August 2024, she formally joined Anthropic, initially as a product manager on the research product team. After that, she took part in internal tool practices for Claude Code, using early Claude Code to build user feedback analysis tools, evaluation environments, and reinforcement learning-related experiments.

Starting in 2025, she and her team began to drive the productization of Claude Code, setting the product roadmap and building the overall feature framework, bringing Claude Code to consumers, and subsequently taking charge of the Cowork product line. According to The Information, in the summer of 2025 she moved to the AI coding startup Cursor, then returned to Anthropic a few weeks later. She previously posted on X that Friday would be her last day at Anthropic.

Counting Cat Wu, four key figures have left Claude Code since June this year. The other three are well-known engineer Thariq Shihipar, Claude Code Desktop creator Anthony Morris, and Claude and Cowork design lead Jenny Wen. The departure of a star product lead, combined with Anthropic making public its IPO documents 10 days ago and foreign media reporting that it plans to list on Nasdaq in the week of November 16, has led outsiders to speculate extensively about talent and product direction.

What changes this personnel move will bring to Anthropic's IPO and the future direction of Claude Code remains to be seen. The market is watching closely to see what moves OpenAI, now armed with a top product talent, will make on its core products. The talent competition behind the movement of star product leads in Silicon Valley will also continue to affect the competitive landscape for AI coding and enterprise collaboration products.
