MeccanicOS, a NixOS-based operating system, offers a one-click USB installer that downloads the latest image, verifies it and creates a bootable 16 GB-or-larger Ventoy drive. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with separate Apple silicon, Intel and ARM builds. On macOS, where Ventoy does not run, it writes MeccanicOS directly to the drive.

Built on NixOS, MeccanicOS is one coherent system rather than a collection of Linux tools. It is keyboard-first: no start menu, and Super+Space opens a command bar for apps, commands, websites, folders and questions. Desktop, apps and drivers sit on the stick, so it works offline and installs without a network.

The installer needs a USB drive of at least 16 GB. Windows users double-click it and may choose More info → Run anyway; macOS and Linux users run a downloaded binary in Terminal. An ISO is available for manual writing, and every drive includes a MeccanicOS-README.pdf with boot and BIOS guidance.

MeccanicOS adds LUKS2 disk encryption, a hardened kernel, a firewall and login alerts. The trade-offs are explicit: sudo asks no password, and an installed system has a keys-only SSH server that stays off until enabled. These choices reduce friction but demand that users understand the security posture.

The system searches nixpkgs’ 120,000 packages and offers local AI after a one-time Qwen3 download of about 2.5 GB through Ollama. Users who prefer manual setup are directed to the ISO and documentation, and questions go to the MeccanicOS group. Only freely redistributable software is included, so users may share ISOs they build.

Upgrades are atomic through a Nix flake, so a failed upgrade changes nothing and can be rolled back. That reproducibility, plus the USB installer, could make MeccanicOS easier to test and deploy. It is available from the project’s GitHub releases.
