Strategy, the Bitcoin-focused corporate treasury company formerly known as MicroStrategy, reported an $8.22 billion net loss for the second quarter of 2024, driven primarily by an $8.32 billion unrealized loss on its massive Bitcoin holdings. The loss reflects a sharp decline in Bitcoin’s price during the quarter, which fell approximately 14% from around $68,000 at the start of April to about $58,600 by the end of June, according to CoinGecko data. As of July 26, Strategy held 843,775 Bitcoin (BTC), representing a 25% increase from the beginning of the year, underscoring its aggressive accumulation strategy despite market volatility.

The company’s Bitcoin holdings are the core of its corporate strategy, which has drawn both praise and criticism from investors. To support its financial obligations, Strategy launched a BTC monetization program earlier this year, allowing it to sell small portions of its Bitcoin stash. During the second quarter and early July, the company sold approximately $218.4 million worth of Bitcoin under this program, with the bulk ($216 million) occurring after the quarter ended in early July. Proceeds were used to partially fund preferred stock dividend payments.

Strategy also disclosed that it has built a $3.75 billion U.S. dollar reserve, which it says is sufficient to cover more than two years of preferred dividend payments and interest obligations. The company recently repurchased $25 million of its STRC preferred shares at a discount to par value and stated its intention to continue buying the securities while they trade below $100. This move signals management’s confidence in the company’s liquidity and long-term viability.

The $8.2 billion loss highlights the extreme volatility inherent in Strategy’s model, which ties its financial performance directly to Bitcoin’s price movements. While the unrealized loss does not require immediate cash outflows, it could affect investor sentiment and the company’s ability to raise capital. The Bitcoin price has since recovered somewhat, trading around $64,700 on Thursday afternoon following the earnings report.

Market reaction to the news was mixed. Strategy (MSTR) shares rose 4.7% during regular trading on Thursday but slipped modestly in after-hours trading after the earnings release, according to Yahoo Finance data. Analysts have noted that the company’s growing Bitcoin treasury and cash reserves may reassure some investors, but the substantial unrealized losses remain a concern. The preferred share repurchase program could also support the stock price by reducing outstanding shares.

Looking ahead, Strategy’s future remains tied to Bitcoin’s trajectory. The company has not signaled any change in its long-term strategy of accumulating and holding Bitcoin, despite the quarterly loss. With a reserve of $3.75 billion and a Bitcoin inventory of over 840,000 coins, Strategy is positioned to weather further volatility, but its success depends on a sustained recovery in cryptocurrency markets. Investors will closely watch Bitcoin price movements and any further monetization activities in the coming quarters.
