Meta has unveiled Muse Glimmer, a new 30-billion-parameter open-weights language model released under a clean Apache 2.0 license on August 10, 2026. The model marks a significant shift from Meta's previous Llama licenses, which many developers found restrictive. Muse Glimmer is specifically designed for end-to-end agentic task completion, reliable tool use, and multi-step reasoning, positioning it as a strong contender for local AI workflows.
The release comes at a time when open-weight models are increasingly competing with proprietary systems in complex, real-world applications. Meta claims the model achieves strong success rates on full-task benchmarks including DeepSearch QA, MCP-Atlas, Ï-Bench, and SWE-Bench. These benchmarks measure capabilities such as working within scaffolds, writing and debugging code, and resolving multi-turn requests from start to finish.
A notable feature of Muse Glimmer is its vision capability, allowing it to process images alongside text. In an early test, the model accurately described a photograph of two pelicans on a rocky shoreline, noting species characteristics, plumage details, and even the presence of smaller birds in the background. This multimodal functionality adds to its versatility for users running local models.
The model is available in various quantized formats, with an 18.16 GB version tested via LM Studio. Developers have also successfully integrated it with tools like llm-coding-agent, where it explored a codebase and answered questions about authentication by making multiple tool calls. Its size is optimized for machines with 32 GB of RAM or more, leaving memory for other applications simultaneously.
Early reactions from the developer community highlight the significance of the Apache 2.0 license, which permits commercial use with fewer restrictions than previous Meta releases. The focus on agentic workflows aligns with industry trends toward autonomous AI systems that can execute multi-step tasks. However, the model's practical performance in production environments remains to be fully evaluated.
Looking ahead, Muse Glimmer could set a new precedent for open-weights models, potentially influencing how other companies approach licensing and capability design. With its combination of reasoning, tool use, and vision, it may accelerate the adoption of local AI for both personal and enterprise applications. As more users test its boundaries, the model's true strengths and limitations will become clearer.
