Bitcoin's price dipped below the $79,000 mark on Thursday, retreating after a brief foray above $80,000 for the first time since May. The pullback saw XRP leading losses among major cryptocurrencies, falling nearly 3% to just above $1.41. This downturn comes as market sentiment shifts, with traders increasingly pricing in the possibility of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike.

The recent crypto rally, which saw Bitcoin surge from below $68,000 just last week, is now facing headwinds from a changing macroeconomic backdrop. Short-term Treasury yields rose overnight as bets on a rate increase grew. The market's focus is now on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's upcoming keynote at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday, just weeks before a critical rate decision on September 15-16.

Despite the daily slip, Bitcoin still holds a solid 14% gain over the past week, though this is down sharply from a 23% gain recorded just a day earlier. Solana bucked the broader trend, rising nearly 4% to just above $101. Analysts point to a key technical resistance level at Bitcoin's May high near $82,820, a break of which could open a path toward $100,000.

Market strategists note that technical indicators on daily charts are in overbought territory, but caution that this doesn't always guarantee a major reversal. A significant factor in the current rally's strength is being questioned by some analysts at QCP Capital. They highlighted that falling open interest suggests the upward move may be driven more by short covering than by fresh, broad-based buying.

The firm also pointed to spot ETF inflows as a source of genuine demand but raised concerns about the rally's foundation. "With liquidity support limited, is this rally becoming structural—or still running on borrowed time?" the analysts questioned. This uncertainty is compounded by the divergent performance in traditional equities, where tech stocks like Nvidia surged on strong sales forecasts.

The cryptocurrency market's next direction appears closely tied to the Federal Reserve's monetary policy signals. A potential rate hike would challenge the lower-yield environment that has recently benefited risk assets like Bitcoin. Traders and investors will closely parse Chair Warsh's comments for clues on the central bank's path, which could determine whether the crypto rally regains momentum or faces a deeper correction.
