The consumer XR headset hardware market has been in a prolonged slump, prompting investors and developers worldwide to turn their attention to offline VR entertainment venues. According to foreign media Road to VR, this shift is becoming a new growth direction for the industry. Offline VR entertainment experiences, with their unique social interaction and immersion, are attracting significant attention. Industry leaders such as Sandbox VR operate approximately 90 venues globally, driving the trend towards multiplayer online offline VR entertainment.

The core advantage of offline VR entertainment venues lies in their social experience. For example, Sandbox VR venues allow up to six players to simultaneously wear VR headsets and haptic vests, engaging in multiplayer games within physical venues equipped with environmental effects. This design not only enhances game interactivity but also provides players with authentic social scenarios, distinguishing it from the solitary experience of traditional home VR. Additionally, many offline VR productions emphasize collaborations with popular film and television IPs, such as Netflix partnerships for "Squid Game: The Virtual Experience" and "Stranger Things: Catalyst" by Sandbox VR, and "Black Mirror Experience" by Univrse with Banijay Live Studio. These collaborations have significantly boosted the appeal and market heat of offline VR.

Industry investment enthusiasm is also rising. The Augmented World Expo held in Long Beach, California, USA in June this year established a dedicated zone for offline VR entertainment venues for the first time and hosted specialized seminars to help developers and investors gain deeper insights into this emerging market. In terms of hardware selection, offline VR entertainment venues predominantly opt for PICO products, rather than the Meta Quest which dominates the consumer market. PICO provides specialized services and technical support for offline scenarios, and its replaceable battery design is favored by merchants, ensuring operational continuity.

Mixed reality technology is gradually integrating into offline VR entertainment. For instance, Dreampark uses Quest 3's passthrough mode to create the MR offline experience "Wizards Way," where players can interact with virtual elements via wand controllers in real-world environments, expanding gameplay possibilities. However, offline VR entertainment venues are not guaranteed profit-makers; even experienced teams may face challenges. The sci-fi VR arena experience "Interstellar ARC," developed by Felix & Paul, opened at AREA15 in Las Vegas in 2025 but closed after only about 10 months of operation, leading to large-scale layoffs and highlighting market risks.

For developers transitioning from home VR to offline VR, adapting to offline operations requires significant adjustments. Popular consumer VR games are often unsuitable for offline environments and must undergo extensive modifications to account for factors such as multiplayer collaboration, equipment durability, hygiene standards, venue size, game duration, and operational costs. This can pose considerable challenges for development teams previously focused on consumer VR. The offline VR entertainment venue market is expected to continue growing, but success will depend on how effectively these complex factors are addressed.
