The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the seizure of over $560,000 in cryptocurrency linked to Hamas, marking a significant disruption to the militant group's digital fundraising operations. The operation, detailed in recently unsealed court documents, involved the FBI taking control of key websites and servers to intercept donations. This action is part of a broader, sustained effort to dismantle the financial networks supporting terrorism.

The seizures were executed through a series of court-authorized cryptocurrency warrants issued in 2025. Specifically, three warrants dated March 25, June 25, and October 10, 2025, led to the recovery of funds from various wallets and accounts. The first action in March recovered approximately $201,400 from a system that had processed over $1.5 million since October 2024, with authorities alleging the addresses were controlled for Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.

Investigators utilized human intelligence to trace rotating crypto addresses promoted via encrypted chats and fundraising websites. This allowed them to gather data on thousands of individuals attempting to fund the group through both cryptocurrency and traditional methods. The infrastructure seizures, authorized by warrants on July 29 and August 18, 2026, targeted the group's main website, Alqassam.ps.

By seizing the domains and servers, the FBI gained the ability to intercept future crypto donations directed to the group. The operation effectively turned Hamas's own fundraising platform into a tool for law enforcement surveillance and intelligence gathering. This move not only halted immediate funding streams but also provided a valuable list of potential financial supporters.

The DOJ highlighted the importance of the operation in disrupting terror financing networks. It underscores the increasing focus on cryptocurrency as a vector for illicit funds and demonstrates the growing capability of law enforcement to trace and seize digital assets. The successful interception points to the effectiveness of combining traditional investigative techniques with blockchain analysis.

This enforcement action sets a precedent for future cases involving the use of digital currencies by terrorist organizations. It signals to groups like Hamas that their online fundraising infrastructure is vulnerable to seizure. As authorities continue to refine their tactics, such operations are likely to become more frequent and sophisticated in the ongoing fight against terror financing.

Looking ahead, the DOJ and FBI will likely build upon the intelligence gathered from this operation. The data on thousands of potential donors could lead to further investigations and legal actions worldwide. This case reinforces the commitment of U.S. agencies to pursuing all financial avenues used to support designated terrorist organizations.
